Since ancient times, devyatilnik, possessing powerful bactericidal and healing properties, was used as a medicinal and miraculous plant protecting against illnesses and witchcraft. In the old days, the gathered herb was blessed in church, dried, used to fill a ladanka (sachet), and then the house was fumigated. It is believed that fumigation drives out all evil spirits from the house and brings peace and harmony, has a calming effect on the nervous system and blood circulation, calms an agitated heart. The smoke from devyatilnik is pleasant with a honey aroma, and burning lasts quite long.
